The Drifter is the only Tiki bar in Belgium and obviously was a must-do for us on our trip to Ghent in the summer of 2014. Unfortunately, we visited Ghent during the Paterholsfeesten. An event in the oldest borough of Ghent: the Patershol. The weather wasn’t working with us and even though we were enjoying a drink from the adapted Drifter menu (we ordered a Sagatiba Sencha Slush with Cachaça and the Espolon Jalisco Ponche with Tequila) in a tent just outside the bar, we couldn’t do what we came to do: check out the regular menu filled with Tiki and Rum cocktails and admire the amazing Tiki decor. We immediately decided we had to come back, soon!
We decided our 10-year-anniversary and 5-year-marriversary was the perfect occasion to take another trip to Ghent. I sent Tom, The Drifter’s owner, a message to make a reservation for two.
On Augusts 25 2016, with a temperature of over 30 degrees Celcius, one of the hottest days of the year, we visited the Drifter. After a very hot day in the beautiful city of Ghent, were could definitely use an ice cold drink. The Drifter serves cocktails the way they are meant to! The Mai Tais, Zombie, Three Dots & A Dash and Dark & Stormy, of course served in Tiki Mugs, were all delicious! Also the non-alcoholic picks from the Doll were a hit. She especially liked the Oddbal.
Tom only uses the best ingredients, fresh fruit juices and homemade syrups in his creations. Aside from cocktails, The Drifter also serves over 120 different types of Rum! The interior design is what you’d expect from a real Tiki bar: Tiki Mugs, bamboo, fishing nets, Tiki masks, a puffer fish and of course lots and lots of rum! Also the exotica, Rockabilly and Surf music that was playing fit the theme perfectly.
We had a blast in this awesome Tiki bar! Before we knew it, it was closing time and before we headed back to our hotel, Tom surprised us with an amazing gift! A real the Drifter Tiki Mug, handmade by Wim Thielemans of Flap’s Tikis!
Tom Neijens is the man behind The Drifter. He also co-founded the Old Fashioned, a 1920s Speakeasy style cocktail bar that is still up and running, and has written a book about – what else – rum!
Most people visit Belgium for the beers, but the Doll and I turned our holidays into true cocktail trips. Aside from The Drifter, we also visited The Old Fashioned and Jiggers, The Noble Drug Store.
